THE LEVITICAL TITHE - BACKGROUND

In order to understand the Levitical tithe, it is necessary to understand the background leading up to the command.

TO THE PROMISED LAND

Genesis 12:1-3 (NIV):
1 The LORD had said to Abram, "Leave your country, your people and your father's household and go to the land I will show you.
2 "I will make you into a great nation and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing.
3 I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you."

Genesis 49:1-2 (NIV):
1 Then Jacob called for his sons and said: "Gather around so I can tell you what will happen to you in days to come.
2 "Assemble and listen, sons of Jacob; listen to your father Israel.

Jacob had twelve sons. Their families and decendents were known as the Twelve Tribes of Israel. These are the children of Israel that left Egypt to go to the promised land.

Exodus 12:40-41 (NIV):
40 Now the length of time the Israelite people lived in Egypt was 430 years.
41 At the end of the 430 years, to the very day, all the LORD'S divisions left Egypt.

Leviticus 20:22-24 (NIV):
22 "'Keep all my decrees and laws and follow them, so that the land where I am bringing you to live may not vomit you out.
23 You must not live according to the customs of the nations I am going to drive out before you. Because they did all these things, I abhorred them.
24 But I said to you, "You will possess their land; I will give it to you as an inheritance, a land flowing with milk and honey." I am the LORD your God, who has set you apart from the nations.

Numbers 18:21 (NIV):
21 "I give to the Levites all the tithes in Israel as their inheritance in return for the work they do while serving at the Tent of Meeting.

In other words, the Twelve Tribes of Israel were to get an inheritance when they reached the promised land. Eleven of the Tribes would inherit the land, and the Tribe of Levi would inherit the tithes.

DIVIDING THE LAND - THE INHERITANCE

Joshua 14:1-5 (NIV):
1 Now these are the areas the Israelites received as an inheritance in the land of Canaan…………..
2 Their inheritances were assigned by lot to the nine-and-a-half tribes, as the LORD had commanded through Moses.
3 Moses had granted the two-and-a-half tribes their inheritance east of the Jordan but had not granted the Levites an inheritance among the rest,
4 for the sons of Joseph had become two tribes…………. The Levites received no share of the land but only towns to live in, with pasturelands for their flocks and herds.
5 So the Israelites divided the land, just as the LORD had commanded Moses.

To summarize: The twelve tribes of Israel left Egypt to go to the promised land. God said eleven of the tribes would be given the land and everything on it as their inheritance, and the twelfth tribe (the tribe of Levi) would inherit the tithe.
